The Assent Difference…

permanentAssent Publishing welcomes our guest blogger today, 2013 Great Romance Contest Finalist Winning Author, Kim Carmichael! For more info, check out http://www.assentpublishing.com/BreathlessSubmissions.aspx

Choosing a publisher is a lot like choosing a spouse. You have two parties who come together, need to work together, and live together, and then they create a baby, namely your book.

Like any other relationship there will always be a give and take, you will have to learn to communicate, and at the end of the day if all works out well, you will both be stronger for it and you will forge a long-term relationship.  I am happy to say I have found that relationship with Assent Publishing.

I became associated with Assent when I entered their 2013 Great Romance Contest.  My manuscript, Permanent, was chosen as a finalist and I was offered a contract for the entire Indelibly Marked series.  It was at that moment that I realized the difference between Assent and other publishers I have worked with.

????????????????????????????????????????PERSONALIZED TREATMENT

From the beginning, I was more than an email address. I wasn’t simply emailed a contract. Assent Publishing’s owner Les Denton scheduled a call with me to review the contract, and I had the opportunity to ask questions.  As an author it is easy to become enamored with any publisher who accepts your work, and it is very easy to sign something without realizing exactly what you signed due to excitement. I appreciated Assent taking this extra step with me.  I have also had the privilege of talking to both of my imprint editors on the phone.  Sometimes hearing a voice makes all the difference.

Assent AcademyASSENT ACADEMY

Probably the largest difference between Assent and other publishers is the Assent Academy.  They are the first publisher to truly address the issue of author marketing.   Run by Deborah Riley-Magnus – the guru behind author platforms and cross marketing – the Assent Academy helps each author build their brand from the ground up, and covers everything from social media presence to publicity and promotions.  Every new author must complete and pass the Assent Academy but trust me, this is only a good thing.  You leave the academy a transformed person, ready to take on the marketing of your book with a solid plan.

eyeglassesTOP NOTCH EDITING

Editing is as important to the story process as writing the story.  It is always hard to hand over your manuscript to your imprint editor and wait to find out what needs to be changed.  With Assent this process was absolutely painless.  Assent goes through several different layers of editing and proofreading and the editors are always continuing their education and polishing their skills.  When I got my edited manuscript, I didn’t look at it longing for what had once been on the page, or feel as if my editor was following some predetermined checklist to squash my voice. Rather I got back my story that sounded as I intended. In fact, I couldn’t even see the edits. All I knew was my story was tighter, that last little bit it needed to shine.

productAN AMAZING FINISHED PRODUCT

By the time my cover was complete, the formatting done, the editing and proofing finished, I was given the joy of being presented with a top-notch finished product, along with the tools I needed to let the world know about my book.

The word assent means to come to an agreement.  By joining the Assent team, I can say the name fits because you work hand in hand with a publisher who will treat you like no other.  I am more than proud to be part of this amazing team.

BELIEVE IN YOUR WORLD AND THE WORLD BELIEVES WITH YOU!

th07 004By spring 2013 I was at the end of several ropes. I’d been writing and writing, but the only thing I’d collected was advice (often useful) and rejections (useful, but difficult to swallow). Then a good friend made me listen to some Anthony Robbins tapes. Anthony Robbins is a self-help guru. He tries to teach people to believe in themselves and go for what they really want to do in life. I saw how these tapes had influenced my friend and thought, as I often do, “If it works for him, it can work for me!”

One of the things I determined not to give up on was a manuscript I’d written a couple of years earlier. It was a sweet little travel story about Thailand. I’d sent out queries, but I’d only gotten nibbles, not bites. And yet, I still very much believed in this novel. It told the story of two sisters traveling in Thailand. I was the prototype for one of the sisters, of course. And my little sister was the other sister, even though we’ve never actually traveled to Thailand together.

th07 254Then by accident, I found Deborah Riley-Magnus’s Writeaholic blog, which happened to be about the dangers of dropping out of the social media picture even for a little while. I enjoyed the blog and found it useful. The writer seemed to understand a lot about writers’ problems. Then I noticed that she was an acquisitions editor for a publishing company, Assent Publishing.

Bingo. I worked on a strong query for several days before sending it out along with the first 50 pages. In the meantime, because I couldn’t stop myself, I started rereading the book, tweaking small things that just had to be fixed.

Ransdell - Thai Twist 750 x 1200To my amazement (I didn’t fall over because I was sitting down), Deborah really enjoyed the beginning! She wanted to see the whole manuscript! What a thrilling feeling! And then the pressure was on. I had to finish that last re-read and send it off to her. (What a long four-day weekend that turned out to be!) I’m so pleased to say that she loved it.

Yesterday I received the first hard copies. To say I’ve been dancing around the room is an understatement. To say that Assent Publishing has opened doors is another understatement. To say that this opportunity is precious to me—you guessed it, another understatement. But now that the door is firmly open, I’m going to keep it that way. Thai Twist is the beginning. What a great place to start! I couldn’t be in better hands.

THE WINNERS OF THE 2013 ASSENT PUBLISHING GREAT ROMANCE CONTEST!

romance writerAssent Publishing’s  Breathless Books Imprint is thrilled to announce the winners of the 2013 GREAT ROMANCE Contest.

This was the most fun we’ve ever had looking at submissions. Between January and May, we saw romance from every possible subgenre, and a few we’d never seen before. The creativity of the writers out there is truly wonderful. We were taken on journeys through other worlds and deep inside the soul. We were introduced to interesting, experimental ideas and truly traditional love stories. We saw young love and old romance. We fell in love and laughed and cried.

After long deliberation and consideration, we have chosen the winners for our first ever annual Breathless Books contest!

She splits her time between writing and travel, which gives her a chance to use her favorite cultural settings. Thailand is a favorite destination because of the friendly people, fascinating temples, and wonderful beaches. Other favorite destinations include Venice, Italy, Paris, France, and Durango, Mexico, where she had her first job teaching English. As we speak, she’s on her way to Rome! FOUR WAYS TO ROMANCE THE PUBLISHER!

Romance the EditorSo many cool things happen when an author sends me a submission. First, I get excited (and even more excited when that author followed the submission guidelines). As I read a well-edited and well-written submission the flutters inside start to buzz, some for the wonderful concept and story unfolding on my screen, and a few of those flutters because I can see how far that author’s career can go. After those first 50 pages hook me and I ask for the full manuscript, I actually wait with bated breath, eager to learn what happens next for those wonderful, multi-dimensional and exciting characters.

You see, I love to be wooed. Here are four ways to romance the publisher.

CandyDon’t send me candy, I’m on a diet. Send me your passion! A book with a few issues but a lot of author passion is far more promising than a perfectly written book by an author unwilling to push that book all the way. If I sense that the author wants to be seen and heard, loves what they are doing and is excited to embark on the query journey, I am very likely to respond, even if it’s a negative I’ll go the extra mile to explain what’s lacking in the letter or manuscript over sending the form rejection. I’m a person in a creative industry, not a machine randomly pushing the yes or no button. I don’t bite.

Over excitedDon’t write me an over-enthusiastic query with flowery language and teasing innuendo, because I can see right through that. Be honest, and please write your query letter with as much skill and crafting as you wrote your book. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing one cold, overly-flamboyant voice in the letter and another completely different voice (better or worse) in the first fifty pages. The recipient of your query would like to know who you are as well as what your book is about. Do that with balance and skill.

first 50Don’t edit ONLY your first fifty! Please be prepared. Too many times I see a wonderful query and first fifty pages and request the full manuscript, only to discover that the author didn’t bother to edit or have an editor work on page 51 to the end. Woo me with pride in your work! Romance me with your attention and commitment to quality! What you send tells me a lot about you, it’s like a dating profile. “I’m single (looking for a publisher), tall (over 65,000 words), exciting (with a great story), who enjoys long walks on the beach (understands the romance genre) and long conversations (and uses my head).” No one wants to date a person who only goes half-way and has no pride in their appearance.

CircusDon’t take me to the circus with ridiculous, cryptic information I have to decode. I’m too busy. I can understand keeping your twisted ending from your prospective readers, but I’m not the one to keep secrets from. The synopsis in your query letter must tell me how the story ends. It’s part of how you make me fall in love with you, the writer and creative thinker, so don’t hold back. Be sure your synopsis is well written, smooth, tells the story and pulls me in.

ROMANCE ME with a great story and I’ll be yours forever! Make me fall in love with not only your story, characters and talent, but also your potential and we’ll go far together. Promise me excitement and drama and it’ll be a marriage made in publishing heaven. The key to romancing a publisher is something most querying authors never think about … I’m not only looking for a great book for my Imprint, I’m looking for a great relationship. We both want the same things, we speak the same language … author success. We could grow old together! Make each other smile and cry and laugh and sigh.

Assent Publishing’s Breathless Books Imprint is accepting submissions! AND here’s one of the ways we can both fall in love! We’re accepting “GREAT ROMANCE” Contest submission until April 30. There’s still time to sweep me off my feet!

Romance Subgenres? I call them Romance SUPERgenres!

Romance is the biggest selling genre in the world. The WHOLE world. But as acquisitions editor here at Breathless Books, Assent Publishing’s Romance Imprint, I love all the subgenres of Romance. In fact, I call them Romance SUPERgenres because they add that wonderful extra layer of interest to already great Romance books. They take Romance into different worlds and different time periods with elegant variations on the traditional direction Romance encompasses. This is a great time and place to tell you what I’m looking for in these Romance Supergenres.

Contemporary Romance – As you know, all Romance novels must be primarily about love, romance, the tragedies and triumphs of passion as well as the dynamic multi-dimentional characters we can’t help but care about. What I’m looking for at Breathless Books Imprint is strong stories within the 65,000 to 80,000 word count that take me on the voyage across love’s challenges. Contemporary Romance is just that, contemporary stories that take place in the here and now, reflecting today’s sensibilities and the elements of life in our everyday word. If a Romance takes place at any time before 1970, we consider it Historical Romance because the situations and influences reflect the society and values from those times. Contemporary Romance submitted to the Breathless Books Imprint, needs to impress me, show me something I haven’t read before in the story elements as well as character development. Always remember, no matter how many elements or secondary stories take place in your Contemporary Romance, the focus must be Romance. NOTE: The Breathless Books Imprint is not looking for erotica. Yes, it’s expected that there is passion and lovemaking in a Romance, but a submissions which focuses primarily on erotic elements, is not what I’m looking for. Our Ardent Books Imprint is the place to submit your erotica. Submission guidelines are on that website.

Historic Romance – Oh yum! Giving me Romance on a historic stage really adds a delightful element to the book. The Stone Age, the Old West, the Victorian Era, Edwardian Era, Medieval Era, the Depression, the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s … the fabulous, difficult and laden with taboos past! Placing a Romance within these times adds that extra punch to the story – but only if it’s written well. Simply dressing your main characters in period clothing won’t do it for us. We need the depth of color and texture that give the reader the sensation of witnessing that romance within the time period’s particular limitations. Do your research and build your Romance within it. But always remember, Romance must be the centerpiece of the story, whether it takes place during the civil war or on the Titanic. Historic Romance is one of the Romance Supergenres the Breathless Books Imprint is actively seeking.

Paranormal Romance – First, a little definition for this particular Romance Supergenre. Paranormal Romance does NOT necessarily mean vampires and werewolves. Elements that fit into the Paranormal Romance category involve any romance situation involving the paranormal or supernatural world. A Paranormal Romance can involve a human and a ghost, or two ghosts who fall in love with each other. It can involve witchcraft, angels, demons or ancient gods, and yes, vampires and werewolves. It can be about a human couple in love and struggling against the interference of supernatural characters, and of course, it can be about a human falling in love with a supernatural creature. Paranormal Romance can take place in an historic, contemporary or even futuristic setting. It must always have the paranormal/supernatural elements, but the key element, as always, is Romance. A wonderful urban fantasy or high fantasy may have romantic elements in the story, but that is not necessarily a Paranormal Romance, so do be careful about submitting. If your fantasy book has romance in it, but romance is not the focus of your book, you may want to take a look at our Phantasm Imprint for consideration.

Futuristic Romance – Love lost and found in space, explorations of the far future and how they see love and romance is what I’m talking about here. Like Historic Romance, the Futuristic Romance Supergenre requires wonderful, creative imaginings of how life will be. It will require research, powerful story layers and multi-faceted characters to make it believable. Suck me into a world that doesn’t exist yet and show me what love will be like in that time. Futuristic Romance can take place on earth, in space or on another planet, it can be a post apocalyptic in nature or simply in a far off time of peace … but it MUST BE A ROMANCE. If you’ve written a science fiction or futuristic horror that has some romantic elements, Breathless Books isn’t the imprint for you.  Check out our other imprints, Bad Day Books or Farther Books for those submissions.

Young Adult Romance – Young Adult Books, and especially Young Adult Books that explore romance tread a thin line and we at Breathless Books are diligent about respecting that line. A young Adult Romance submitted to us must be appropriate for the target age of the reader. No explicit sex scenes are acceptable. Period. Young Adult romance books can be historical in nature, have paranormal elements or take place in the future. The main characters in the book can be between 15 and 18. It is understood that many Young Adult Romance books explore the difficulties of puberty and are built on the coming of age premise, but Breathless Books reserves the right to reject any submission that we deem inappropriate for young adult readers. Show me romance that fits this target reader, make it dynamic with rich story elements and wonderful characters, and by all means, thrill me with young love.

Humorous Romance – Is love funny? It can be. It’s the light side of Romance. The hapless uncoordinated man falls down the steps and falls for his beautiful landlord. The shy woman discovers a new pair of shoes that make her feel beautiful and wins the handsome co-worker’s heart. The cat lover who falls for her vet. The drycleaner’s clerk who repeatedly discovers love letters in a handsome patron’s pockets and imagines the woman they were written for, only to learn they are for her. The librarian who falls for a garbage man. The concepts are endless and when written well, can be brilliant Romance. Make me smile while I fall in love with the main characters. Romance mixed with tears of laughter is a great thing!

Yep. Romance SUPERgenres. Assent Publishing and the Breathless Books Imprint is thrilled to publish them!

Assent Publishing’s Breathless Books Imprint is currently accepting Romance submissions. Send your submissions to editor@breathlessbooks.com. I’ve got my Kleenex, chocolates and steaming cup of tea.
